How To Get Turmeric Out of Carpet?

In this article, we are going to look at how to get turmeric out of a carpet. Turmeric is a yellow spice used in a lot of Indian dishes including curries. Besides being used in dishes, it is also used as a yellow fabric dye.

This is due to the fact that it settles deep into the fibers which makes it really difficult to get out. Because of this, a turmeric stain on your carpet will be pretty difficult to get out. So, is it possible to get turmeric out of your carpet and if so, how exactly do you go about it?

To remove turmeric from your carpet, you need to act quickly. As soon as the accident happens, remove any excess turmeric from the carpet then gently press a cloth over the stain to suck some of it out. You then need to use vinegar, baking soda, and toothpaste mixture to clean the spot using a toothbrush. Use circular motions starting from the edges and working inwards. Rinse off the spot then soak it for about 15 minutes with the solution then rinse again to remove any remaining stains.

A turmeric stain is pretty nasty as it will leave a yellow stain which will make any carpet look bad. Though it is technically possible to get it out, if you leave it in for too long, you may have a permanent situation on your hands.

Are Turmeric Stains on Carpet Permanent?

Technically speaking, a turmeric stain can be removed from your carpet but in certain instances, you will need to call in a professional with the right equipment to do the job for you.

I will talk about that later in the article. There is a good reason why turmeric is sometimes used as a natural fabric dye. Its qualities allow it to soak deep into fabric and binding with the fibers.

For this reason, the turmeric stain can become permanent. In such cases, only specialized equipment will break the stain up.

To succeed in using home remedies on turmeric, you will need to follow certain procedures and act within a specific time limit to get the stain dealt with.

How do you remove turmeric stains from the carpet?

Now, let’s look at how to successfully get a turmeric stain out of your carpet. The first thing you need to do is move really quickly.

You need to do this in order to prevent the turmeric from settling into the fibres of your carpet. Firstly, make sure to remove any excess that may still be on the surface.

You can do this by gently scooping with a spoon. Make sure not to rub it as this only makes it soak deeper into the carpet.

Next, take a cloth and gently press it into the carpet to soak up some of the turmerics. Your next step will depend on what you have available in the house. We are now going to look at some of these homemade remedies which you can use to get the stain out.

Soap and Warm

Water Good old soap and water can get the job done granted that you do it quickly and the stain isn’t a bad one. Take some warm water (not hot) then soak the stained spot.

Allow sitting for a few minutes then start brushing the spot in circular motions using a toothbrush or other soft brush. Rinse it out then repeat as many times as necessary until you get the stain out. As already stated, this works best for light stains that aren’t too deep-seated.

Dish Washing Liquid and Baking Soda

This mixture is a bit more potent than soap and water. For this one, you mix equal parts of the dishwasher with baking soda. It can be a teaspoon or a few tablespoons depending on the size of the stain.

Mix the 2 ingredients into a paste then apply to the stain. Using a toothbrush, make circular motions working from the outside perimeter of the stain until you reach the center.

Do this for a few minutes then rinse off. Next, apply the mixture again but this time allow it to sit for 15 minutes before using the toothbrush again. Once done, rinse the spot again and repeat where necessary.

Vinegar/ Lemon Baking Soda Solution

Instead of dishwashing liquid, you can also use vinegar or lemon juice. These are the big three in my opinion. They are the most versatile ingredients with a multiplicity of applications.

Every kitchen should have them ready at any given moment. Mix equal parts of either vinegar or lemon and baking powder.

Apply on the stain and allow it to soak for about 3 to 5 minutes then use a toothbrush to brush the stain.

Always use gentle circular motions as in the previous method. Rinse and repeat as necessary until you get the stain out.

Vinegar, Toothpaste, and Baking Soda Solution

This method involves the same ingredients as in the last method with the addition of toothpaste. This mixture is slightly more potent than the last one and will give you a lot better results.

It works well on carpet stains as well as other fabrics. Mix equal parts of vinegar, toothpaste, and baking soda into a paste.

Apply on the stained portion and scrub with a toothbrush using circular motions just like in the previous methods. Rinse off then repeat the process.

This time allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes then scrub again. Lastly, rinse it off and if it is still stained, repeat the process until the spot is clean.

Using Bleach Bleach

is another alternative you can use but it is only recommended that you use it on white carpet.

Using it on coloured carpet will leave a bleach spot on your carpet.

This is not a train mash though as you could call in a professional to dye the bleached spot.

Calling in a Professional

There are times when you will need to call in a professional carpet cleaner to do the job. This is not a job for any carpet cleaner though, they have to have the specialized equipment necessary to get the job done.

This includes a steamer and UVB/UVA chemical activation light. These will help lift the stain out of your carpet without damaging it as some chemicals or bleach would do.

Before you engage them, ask for and contact any references they have where they’ve cleaned turmeric

Conclusion

Though turmeric is the last thing you want to get onto your carpet, all hope is not lost. If you act quickly, you have a good chance of getting the stain out as we’ve shown you in this article.
